Using Eco-Friendly Straws for a Better Future

Plastics are facing more bans by the day. The pollution found in the oceans attributed to plastics is causing many companies to ban plastics. The ban is effectively being implemented on plastic straws.Companies are being obligated to turn to eco-friendly alternatives. Plastic straws are still being manufactured by some companies which have not yet embraced eco-friendly straws. There still wants regarding the implementation of the plastic straw ban in the world due to selfishness emanating from the manufacturers.

It has been found that there are 500 million plastic straws that are thrown on a daily basis after a single use. These alarming statistics are for the United States of America only. 175 billion straws a year is what you get if you calculate the usage per year. This rate explains why sea turtles with plastic straws on their noses is a common occurrence.

Recycling of plastic only caters for a small percentage of the plastic that is disposed of. On accurate terms, recycling handles a mere 14 percent of the plastic packaging. Collection systems are not able to arrest a staggering 32 percent of the plastics.

The oceans receive 8 million metric tons of plastic residue on a yearly basis. This is too much plastic waste by any standards.Sadly, plastic straws are unlikely to end up in recycling systems. Consequently, a high percentage of waste straws will find their way into the ocean. As they get into the ocean; they are consumed by marine animals and also pose a threat to all marine life.

This is the reason environmentalists won’t rest until they ensure plastic straws are permanently banned.
